6 tips to protect your eyes while reading this story

What’s the first thing you do in the morning? If you’re like most Americans, you check your phone. We live in an increasingly digital world, with more and more time spent staring at screens.

Unsurprisingly, that is starting to show its wear and tear on our bodies, especially our eyes. The New York Times reports that up to 90 percent of people who heavily interface with screens suffer from dry eye, fatigued eyes, headaches or blurred vision. These are all symptoms of Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS), a diagnosis given to more than 70 million Americans, although many more are likely suffering undiagnosed. Since our time in front of the screen will only increase as our digital world develops, protecting our eyes is more important than ever. Luckily, we live alongside Dr. Thai-An Nguyen, a Therapeutic Optometrist who just opened EyeVenue at 2714 Greenville Ave., a full-service destination for your eyes. She’s seen the growing pain CVS has caused, and knows these six steps will do wonders toward keeping those irritants out of your eyes.

  • Remember the 20/20 rule — For every 20 minutes you are on a screen, take a 20 second break to focus your eyes on something off in the distance, thus combating fixed gaze. To help you keep track, there are a variety of apps and software to remind you, even freezing your screen so you can’t work through your eye break.
  • Light the way — The bright glow from your computer screen is what’s damaging your eyes, so minimize other light sources in the room to reduce any additional harmful glare (this includes sunlight). Draw the shades and use lower wattage bulbs. The brightness of your screen should match the brightness of your environment.
  • Blink it out — People blink less when working on screens, don’t deny your eyes the moisture they need.
  • Ergonomic overhaul — A properly set up work station, where your monitor is at an appropriate height and distance for your body, will make a world of difference. Click here to find out how to find the sweet spot.
  • Get reflective — If you wear glasses or computer glasses, splurge on the anti-reflective coating on your lens. It reflects the light before the beams reach your eyes — so take that, glare!
  • Make an appointment — Regular check ups are critical to nip any growing eye health problems in the bud. Make it an annual plan to keep your peepers healthy with a visit to Dr. Nguyen and stay in style with the latest frames from trendsetters like Tom Ford, Kate Spade, Tory Burch, RayBan and LaFont
